Why is Vitamin C so Super?

The immune-boosting benefits of vitamin C often take the spotlight, however, vitamin C has lots of other incredible benefits.

What Does Vitamin C Support?

As well as supporting optimal immune function, vitamin C also actively supports:

  • Collagen synthesis necessary for healthy hair, skin and nails
  • Wound healing
  • Production of neurotransmitters serotonin, melatonin
  • Protect us from oxidative stress (it's a powerful antioxidant)
  • It blocks nitrites from converting into nitrosamines—bacon eaters, pair your rashers with some vitamin C to offset the nitrates.

How Much Vitamin C Do We Need?

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin C is 60mg. This is based on the average levels of vitamin C you need to not get scurvy…

With health being a spectrum, we're not interested in the lower end of the spectrum that just narrowly avoids scurvy and other illnesses that comes with nutritional deficiencies. What we are interested in is providing our bodies with optimal levels of these nutrients so we can improve our quality and enjoyment of life.

We recommend a daily allowance of 300mg. However, when we're under the weather or in times of increased stress, we have an increased need for vitamin C.

Can I Take Too Much Vitamin C?

Our body is smart, and levels of vitamin C are tightly regulated. You can't overdose on vitamin C, because it's not toxic. The only effect you will get is a loose bowel movement when your body can't absorb any more of it.

As vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin, and has a short half-life, meaning it doesn't stay in our body very long. We recommend having a small amount of vitamin C a few times throughout the day.

Where Can I Get Vitamin C From?

Citrus fruits high in vitamin C come into season around autumn-winter when our requirements are heightened—nature is smart!

In summer, veggies like capsicum and kale, and fruits like kiwifruit, tomatoes, stone fruits and berries (especially strawberries) are all great sources of vitamin C. Fresh and recently off the tree are always best.

80% of the water soluble vitamins in produce (like vitamin C) are lost within four days of harvest. To ensure you're getting enough vitamin C, you can also supplement with bioavailable vitamin C throughout the day.

We have formulated BePure Super Boost C as a high-quality, high-strength source of vitamin C with improved bioavailability with the addition of bioflavonoids and zinc.
